Timeline & What to Expect

After the loss of a loved one, it can be difficult to know what happens next. At Hemans Funerals, we are here to guide you through each stage with care, clarity, and compassionate support.

Every funeral arrangement is unique, but this guide outlines the typical timeline and what families can generally expect in the days and weeks ahead.

Immediately After Someone Dies

In the first few hours, a doctor, hospital, hospice, or care home will confirm the death and explain the next steps.

At this stage:

  • A Medical Certificate Cause of Death will usually be issued
  • Your loved one may be taken into our care
  • We can begin supporting you with funeral arrangements
  • If the death was unexpected, the Coroner may become involved

This can often feel overwhelming, but you do not need to manage everything alone. We are here to guide you gently through the process.

Timeline and support

Within the First Few Days

During the first few days, the death will normally need to be registered.

You will usually:

  • Register the death with the local Register Office
  • Receive documents needed for the funeral
  • Begin discussing funeral wishes and arrangements
  • Decide between burial or cremation
  • Choose the type of service you would like

We can help explain all available options, including traditional funerals, celebration of life services, direct cremations, and culturally specific arrangements.

Planning the Funeral

Once the legal paperwork is completed, we will work closely with you to organise every detail of the funeral.

This may include:

  • Choosing a date and time for the service
  • Arranging burial or cremation
  • Selecting music, readings, and tributes
  • Organising flowers and transport
  • Preparing orders of service
  • Arranging chapel visits and viewings
  • Coordinating livestreaming for family abroad or unable to attend

At Hemans Funerals, every arrangement is handled with dignity, respect, and personal care.

The Day of the Funeral

On the day itself, our role is to ensure everything runs smoothly so families can focus on remembering and honouring their loved one.

We will:

  • Guide and support the family throughout the day
  • Coordinate transport and timings
  • Liaise with officiants, cemeteries, or crematoria
  • Ensure every detail is managed professionally and respectfully

Whether the service is simple and private or larger and more traditional, we are there to support you throughout.

After the Funeral

Grief does not end when the funeral service finishes. Many families still need guidance and support in the weeks ahead.

After the funeral, you may need to:

  • Notify banks, utility companies, and organisations
  • Begin probate or estate administration
  • Arrange memorials or headstones
  • Access bereavement or emotional support

We can continue to offer aftercare guidance, signposting to support services, and ongoing compassionate support whenever needed.

Every Family's Journey Is Different

Some funerals are arranged within a few days, while others may take several weeks depending on family wishes, cultural traditions, repatriation requirements, or coroner involvement.

At Hemans Funerals, Diane Hemans understands that every family's needs are unique. We take the time to listen carefully, explain things clearly, and help you make decisions at your own pace.

You do not need to have all the answers immediately. We are here to walk beside you every step of the way.
