What Documents You Need

Before a funeral can usually take place, the death must be registered with the local register office.

You may be asked to provide:

• The Medical Certificate Cause of Death (issued by the doctor or hospital)
• The deceased's NHS number or NHS medical card (if available)
• Birth certificate (if available)
• Marriage or civil partnership certificate (if applicable)
• Proof of address
• Details of the deceased's occupation
• The full name, date of birth, and address of the deceased
• Details of any surviving spouse or civil partner

The registrar will also ask for information about the person who is registering the death.

You may need:

• National Insurance number
• Passport details
• Driving licence number
• Vehicle registration details
• Details of benefits or pensions
• Information about council services being received

The registrar will provide you with a unique reference number for this service.

Sometimes the Coroner may become involved, particularly if the death was sudden, unexpected, or unexplained. In these situations, different paperwork may be issued before the funeral can proceed.
